Innovation workshops for startups across 3 cities

We partnered with Facebook to run innovation workshops for startups across 3 cities. The workshops helped startups make their products more transparent and give users better control over their data. Workshops were attended by participants from companies like Flipkart, Phonepe, ClearTax and Zerodha.

Design Jams help startups collaborate on problems of trust, transparency and control using design as a medium.

Data protection features, such as privacy statements and consent requests, are often an afterthought and are plugged into products to cater to compliance. But these features are essential for building trust and confidence with users. The challenge is, product managers and designers don’t understand compliance and best practices, and policymakers or advisors don’t understand product design and how to look at a solution through the eye of users. Both groups are therefore working in silos.

We use Design Jams to bring product managers, designers, policy advisors and data regulators together to solve real-world design problems. Through hands-on prototyping, they come to understand the realities of designing for transparency, trust and control. By the end of the workshop, they are able to develop concrete solutions that can be implemented in their projects.

Design for Bharat

India is at the stage where discussions around “data privacy” are restricted to savvy techies and policy enthusiasts. In a country of over a billion people with millions of first-time internet users, this isn't a pretty picture. The project vision is to help create awareness around “Privacy by Design” among product makers and help policymakers understand how to develop solutions that can be compliant and privacy-focussed, yet visually pleasing and easy to use.

Design workshops to engage 250+ participants across India

In 2019, we hosted four Design Jams across India in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Delhi. Each event was akin to eight design sprints happening in parallel! With hours of research, meticulous planning and loads of passion, we made sure each event was a success. These workshops acted as a catalyst to change the purview of design in adopting a holistic view on designing for trust, transparency and control. During these jams, it was great working together with the startups, think tanks and research organisations.

Innovative design solutions for the Indian context

The best part about Design Jams is that, like a Design Sprint, we get to tangible solutions in the form of interactive prototypes by the end. Teams surprised us with what they could create in a day. Here are bits of prototypes they created during the jams.

What people have to say about Design Jams

“It’s amazing to see how a diverse group of people can, in a single day, go from deeply understanding a problem to creating prototype solutions that can really change the world.”

- Dan Hayden, Data Strategist at Facebook

“The mindset with which we have been developing products for the first 100 million users might not be necessarily used for developing products for the remaining 900 million users in India. So that is essentially why we need to rethink our product design principles and how technology would impact these people.”

- Dharmesh BA, Head at D91 Labs

“Highly energetic.”

All of our users loved the new transparent data documentation. They found it easy to navigate between data sets based on data sources or indicators.

“It’s a good starting point!”

- Sameer Bhiwani, Vice President - Design & Customer Experience at Scripbox
